What We Lose Every Time We Start Over
Yemi Oluseun at TEDxGosport
Progress is not always about starting again. Sometimes, it is about knowing what to keep.
Delivered at TEDxGosport on 5 September 2026, Yemi Oluseun explores what organisations lose when valuable knowledge, relationships and capability disappear every time people, systems or circumstances change.
Central Idea
Starting over has a cost.
Organisations are often rewarded for creating something new: a new strategy, new technology, new leadership team or new way of working.
But every reset also creates a question:
What are we losing that should have been carried forward?
When knowledge is not transferred, relationships are not preserved and capability has to be rebuilt repeatedly, organisations lose more than time.
They lose continuity.
Progress is not only about what we create next. It is also about what we deliberately preserve.
What gets lost?
Knowledge
What people know about how the work really gets done.
Relationships
Trust, context and history built with customers, colleagues and partners.
Capability
The routines, judgement and experience that allow organisations to perform consistently.
When these disappear during change, organisations often pay to rebuild value they had already created.
FROM TEDx TO CONTINUITY BY DESIGN
The conversation continues with Continuity by Design.
The TEDx talk asks what organisations lose when they repeatedly start again.
Continuity by Design explores the next question:
How do we deliberately preserve the knowledge, customer value and organisational capability worth carrying forward?
Through essays, conversations and practical frameworks, I examine how organisations design for continuity through growth, transformation and transition.
FROM IDEA TO PRACTICE
Continuity is also an operating problem.
The same challenge appears in transformation programmes, transactions and customer relationships.
A carve-out must decide what needs to move with the business.
An integration must decide what should be retained, combined or retired.
A Finance transformation must preserve critical controls and operating knowledge while changing systems and processes.
A service business must retain customer knowledge and value as work moves between Sales, Delivery and Finance.
Through The Change Hive, I lead Finance, Treasury and M&A transformation where those decisions need to become operational reality.
